The AY glass by Irris

In July 2018, Maxence Dulou, Ao Yun’s Estate Director travelled to Austria to meet Maximilian and Irris. Together, they spent hours studying and testing dozens of glasses. This workshop inspired a selection of glasses, to be tested extensively in the following months.

One glass stood out during the various tastings, consistently voted the favorite. Many adjustments were made to achieve the perfect sensation: The Ao Yun glass was created.

Its only purpose: offer the best organoleptic enjoyment of Ao Yun, the first Grand Cru of the Himalayas.

The sharp cut and narrow diameter of the edge of the Ao Yun glass allows for a more precise tasting experience and enhances the aromas on the nose and palate.

“Tasting Ao Yun in its bespoke glass highlights the balance of fruit and intensity, as well as the silky texture and rounded tannins of this wine” said Maxence Dulou. “The larger bowl of the glass was specifically designed to better oxygenate the wine. Since Ao Yun is vinified at altitude with 25% less oxygen, it requires more contact with the air prior to tasting”, Maxence Dulou added.

For Maxence Dulou, Ao Yun is a living adventure, “It is rare and extraordinary to be able to taste the first vintages of a new terroir. These wines incarnate the journey, adventure and perseverance behind Ao Yun – a story that has only just begun.”

This glass was made optimal for Ao Yun, but its model inspired then a dedicated collection of glasses by Irris, named Irris Winewings.
